Postdoc of the Day!

Bojana Stefanovska, PhD

Biochemistry & Structural Biology

"Dr. Bojana Stefanovska is originally from North Macedonia and has studied in Padova, Italy and Paris, France before moving to the United States to join the Harris group as an HHMI postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Stefanovska has also competed successfully for an independent grant from the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and she recently received a Philippe Foundation Scientific Award for her cutting-edge studies. Dr. Stefanovska is deeply interested in mechanisms of tumor evolution and is using CRISPR screens to discovery novel ways of killing APOBEC-driven tumor cells. Her long-term goal is ensuring that these fundamental discoveries are translated into clinical benefits."

Lawrence M. Carey, PhD

Pharmacology
NIDA T32 Research Fellow

"Despite moving from Oregon to Texas in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Lawrence M. Carey IV (“Larry”) hit the ground running and quickly became an expert with a number of behavioral and physiological procedures my laboratory uses to study substances of abuse. Larry had already been very productive before joining our group, having published a dozen or so papers, and he was an expert on cannabinoid pharmacology (one focus of my laboratory). Larry is an excellent communicator and a delightful person who gives generously of his time and expertise, including his current mentorship of two undergraduate students. We are about to submit a manuscript with Larry as first-author that describes his studies on interactions between opioids and cannabinoids and we anticipate hearing good news in the near future regarding an F32 application he submitted that received an outstanding score."

Valentina Garbarino, PhD

Neurology
Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s & Neurodegenerative Diseases

"Valentina has an extremely broad knowledge base. She had won acclaim for her PhD bench science studying mouse models of senescence but wanted to learn how to do translational science in people. During her post-doc she proved to be just as gifted in communicating with, empathizing, persuading, reassuring participants. As a scientist she is meticulous, indefatigable, curious, enthusiastic and a creative thinker working on cutting edge biomarkers and methods. Further, she personifies Biggs values not only of creativity and caring but also of collaboration and humility. No wonder she is adored by patients, peers (and her pet puppies)."

Rogers M. Brown, PhD

Cellular & Integrative Physiology
NIGMS K12 IRACDA Scholar

"Dr. Rogers Brown, a SABER-IRACDA Fellow at UT Health San Antonio, has been a foundational member of our research group since joining in 2020. His natural leadership skills and calm demeanor continue to serve him as a role model and mentor within our team. Dr. Brown's research has been providing exciting potential biomarkers and interventional targets for sensorimotor dysfunction in Alzheimer's Disease and related neurodegenerative pathologies. We enthusiastically celebrate this member of our academic community!"
