In this role, the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct research experiments for a preclinical Alzheimer’s disease study. Under general supervision, the postdoctoral fellow will lead efforts focusing on animal care/husbandry, therapeutic intervention, behavioral and cognitive testing, necropsy, histology, and other research activities in support of the study. Study tracking and organization as well as thorough data collection and maintenance will be critical for this position. In addition to experimental activities, the postdoctoral fellow will also perform statistical analyses, aid in interpreting study findings, and draft peer-reviewed, open-access scientific manuscripts based on this research. The fellow is encouraged to engage in grant writing opportunities to secure additional extramural funding to expand and extend these research efforts as well as support their own career development. As a Bieniek laboratory member, the fellow will also be a part of a larger research team comprising the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s & Neurodegenerative Disease (Biggs Institute) Brain Bank and South Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Center Neuropathology Core (a nationally-recognized center sponsored by the National Institute on Aging). This position will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including tissue processing and staining automation. This postdoctoral fellow position is an integral and vital role in the Bieniek Lab’s mission to understand Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders pathophysiology, through neuropathology research, towards advance scientific discovery, improving diagnostic capabilities, and ultimately, finding a cure for these debilitating neurodegenerative disorders.

Position Requirements

  1. Expertise in handling mice, organizing colony maintenance/breeding, and performing behavioral studies (and other research protocols).
  2. Experience in leading scientific research, from study design/conceptualization to research publication (i.e., has first-author publications).
  3. Detail oriented with meticulous planning, time management and organizational skills.
  4. Comfort working in a research laboratory setting, including adherence to biosafety techniques and regulations.
  5. Ability to handle time-sensitive duties expeditiously, including animal care, histology and other related activities.
  6. Knowledge and familiarity with standard laboratory instruments.
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills, namely the ability to clearly and effectively communicate operational matters with members of the Bieniek lab team as well as scientific findings and information with colleagues, peers, and the biomedical research community at-large.
  8. Inter-personal skills, compassion and respect for others, to complement collaborative team science within the laboratory.
  9. Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), statistical analysis programs (GraphPad, SPSS, R, etc.), and research databases as well as digital literacy/proficiency for learning new software programs.
  10. Dedication and commitment to the Biggs Institute Brain Bank donors and their families to advance research in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
